More Than 150 Years of Tradition and Innovation in Mannheim
In 1871, automotive inventor and pioneer Carl Benz founded his “Mechanical Workshop” in Mannheim, laying the cornerstone for the MWM brand. Since then, the engineers have continuously delivered new developments that have made MWM a leading supplier of gas engines and solutions for distributed energy generation.
150 Years of Continuous Innovation
In 2021, MWM celebrated its 150th anniversary. This significant milestone in the history of MWM was celebrated at the original location in Mannheim, Germany, under the motto “150 years of continuous innovation”. Some of the innovation highlights of the early decades include the first successful commissioning of the “Benz system” gas engine designed by Carl Benz, the ride in Carl Benz’s patented motorcar, the bulk production of two-stroke gas engines, and the introduction of the MWM motorhorse.
100 Years MWM Brand
In 2022, MWM celebrated its 100th brand anniversary. In 1922, Benz & Cie. sold the Stationary Engine Building department. After the sale was finalized under a spin-off agreement, the stationary engine production became independent on April 22, 1922. From then on, it operated under the name “Motoren-Werke Mannheim A.-G. vorm. Benz, Abt. stationärer Motorenbau”. In January 1923, the first official MWM trademark was registered with the Imperial Patent Office.
